Diabetes
Diabetes dietitians in Cape Town
Type 1, type 2, pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes and insulin resistance, managed around your actual medication and your actual numbers. In our Bellville, Panorama and Durbanville rooms, on the wards at three Mediclinic hospitals, or online anywhere in South Africa.
Type 1 diabetes
Carbohydrate counting, insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios and correction factors, worked out around how you actually eat. Sport, shift work and travel included.
Type 2 & pre-diabetes
Plans built around your medication rather than against it. Most patients see meaningful HbA1c movement by their 3-month re-check.
Gestational diabetes
Managed alongside your gynaecologist, with stable glucose usually within 1–2 weeks of starting.
Insulin resistance
Including PCOS-related insulin resistance. Addressed on the metabolic pathway, not with a shorter food list.
How it works
What happens in a diabetes consult
We start from your medication
Your plan is built around what you take and when you take it, so that food and medication work together instead of pulling against each other. Your prescription stays with your doctor. What we change is everything around it.
Carbohydrate counting, properly taught
For type 1 and for anyone using insulin: insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios, correction factors, and how to count the food already on your plate. Taught in plain language, using your own meals, until you stop needing to think about it.
CGM and glucose patterns
Bring your sensor download or your meter and we read the patterns with you. What the overnight line is doing, which meals spike and why, and the one change worth making first.
HbA1c, tracked rather than guessed
Every visit is measured against your HbA1c and your glucose readings rather than against how the week felt. Most patients see meaningful HbA1c movement by their 3-month re-check.
InBody at every visit
Fat, muscle and body water measured in under a minute, included in most consultations at no extra charge. When medication changes your weight, this is what tells you which kind of weight actually moved.
GLP-1 medication support
If you are on a GLP-1 medication, up to 40% of the weight you lose can be muscle without the right plan. We track lean mass with InBody at every visit and build protein-forward plans that protect it.
What it costs
Diabetes is a Prescribed Minimum Benefit
Most visits cost little or nothing on the day
Diabetes is a Prescribed Minimum Benefit condition, so most medical aids cover your dietitian visits under chronic benefits. We claim directly from your scheme, and we handle the chronic-benefit and PMB paperwork for you.
We check your cover before you arrive
We confirm your benefits ahead of the appointment and tell you upfront if your plan has a shortfall. No referral letter is needed to see us.
