Frequently Asked Questions

Answers before you even have to ask

The questions new patients ask us most often. If yours isn’t here, call or WhatsApp us on 064 502 8158 (Bellville/Panorama) or 079 574 7859 (Durbanville). If it’s quick, we’ll simply tell you on the spot.

Money & medical aid

Cover and costs

Will my medical aid cover this?

Yes, most major medical aid schemes cover 2 to 6 dietitian visits per year, and most schemes (GEMS, Polmed, Bestmed, Sizwe, LA Health and others) cover dietitian visits under their Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMB) or chronic-care benefits, particularly for conditions like diabetes, hypertension, renal disease, oncology and pregnancy.

How the claim works depends on your practice. Our Bellville & Panorama practice is contracted with Discovery, Momentum, Bonitas and Medihelp and claims directly from your scheme, so most visits cost little or nothing on the day. Our Durbanville practice bills you on the day and gives you a fully coded invoice to submit to your scheme for reimbursement. Either way, we tell you what to expect before your first appointment.

What if I’m not on a contracted scheme, or paying cash?
We charge Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) tariff rates, the same rates your medical aid would pay, and issue a detailed invoice you can submit to any scheme. For PMB-eligible conditions (over 270 chronic diagnoses), our Bellville & Panorama practice submits claims on your behalf, and both practices write motivation letters where required.
Do you work with Discovery Vitality or Bestmed Tempo?
Yes. We’re a partner practice for both wellness programmes. A dietitian assessment can earn you programme points; ask us when booking and we’ll make sure your visit is captured correctly.

Your first visit

What to expect

What happens at my first visit?

Your first session is 45–60 minutes and covers four things:

  1. Your full nutrition history: what you eat, when, why, and what hasn’t worked before
  2. A clinical review: your medication, blood work, medical history and goals
  3. InBody body composition scan (optional but recommended, available at all three offices), more useful than a scale
  4. Your personalised plan: written, tailored to your medication, blood work, culture and budget

You leave with a written plan, often a 7-day starter menu, and a follow-up appointment. We send a written report to your referring doctor within 48 hours.

What should I bring?
  • Recent blood results if you have them (last 6 months), especially HbA1c, kidney function, iron studies, lipids, vitamin D
  • A list of your current medication, including over-the-counter supplements
  • Your medical aid card (we’ll check your cover)
  • Rough notes on what you eat in a typical week, even approximate helps

If a doctor referred you, bring the referral letter or have them email it to us beforehand.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You book directly with us. However, some medical aids reimburse better with a referral, particularly for chronic conditions. If you have one, ask your GP or specialist for a quick referral letter, a 2-minute task for them that can mean better cover for you.
How long until I see results?

Most patients see meaningful results within 4–8 weeks of consistent implementation:

  • Diabetes: HbA1c improvement by your 3-month re-check
  • Blood pressure: measurable reduction within 6–8 weeks
  • Weight: a sustainable 0.5–1 kg per week (faster usually means muscle loss)
  • GLP-1 patients: preserved lean mass and fewer side effects within 4 weeks
  • IBS: symptom improvement within 4 weeks on a structured protocol
  • Pregnancy / GDM: stable glucose readings within 1–2 weeks

Results depend on following the plan, which is why we build plans that fit your real life.

The practical details

Do you offer InBody body composition analysis?
Yes. Our Bellville, Durbanville and Panorama offices each run an InBody analyser. It measures fat mass, muscle mass (per limb), total body water, an estimated visceral fat level and basal metabolic rate in under a minute, and it’s included in most consultation types at no extra cost. Do you do telehealth / online consultations?
Yes: secure video consultations for follow-ups and for patients who can’t reach our rooms, anywhere in South Africa and abroad. Initial consultations are usually in person, especially where an InBody scan is part of your plan.
Do you do home visits?
Yes, in the Bellville, Durbanville and Panorama areas, for patients with mobility challenges, post-surgical recovery, or where a home-based dietary assessment is more useful. Call to arrange.
Do you see patients in hospital?
Yes: daily inpatient cover at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt, Mediclinic Durbanville and Mediclinic Cape Gate, including weekends. Ask your treating team for a Reset Health referral. How hospital care works →
Do you see children?
Ask us. We take on selected cases. If your child’s needs fall outside what we manage, we will refer you to the right paediatric dietitian.
